CLASSES
Hula and Hawaiian Language Classes are offered by donation to Nā Wai Iwi Ola Foundation.
Class Donation Policy:
Nā Wai Iwi Ola is a 501(c) (3) is a non profit organization. Classes are conducted on a donation basis and the donations go to further Nā Wai Iwi Ola's mission to perpetuate the Hawaiian culture and practices through hula protocol and ceremonies and the use and study of the Hawaiian language.
Class participants are asked to consider carefully the cultural, language, and hula protocol knowledge as well as personal growth that is gained while participating in classes with Kumu Keala.
Students are requested to either pledge a donation of $60 per month per class or donate $15 per class to attend.

Please note: NO video recording is permitted at any class without permission from Kumu Keala.

Hoʻonui ʻike – Hawaiian Culture & Hula
When: Monday 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm
Level: all Levels
Where: at Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay, Bay View Lawn
Immerse oneself into Hawaiian culture, language, chanting and dance. Focusing on foundational hula basics. All levels welcome!
Papa ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi – Hawaiian Language
When: Monday 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm
Level: Beginners
Where: at Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay, Aloha Center
Explore the Hawaiian Language through the Pīʻāpā (Hawaiian Alphabet), Hakalama (Building Block), Huaʻōlelo (Vocabulary), simple Hawaiian conversation and Oli (Hawaiian chants).
Nā Wai Puna o Kona / Kūpuna
When: Tuesday 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
Level: all Levels
Where: Gazebo, West Hawaii Civic Center
Gathering of Kūpuna (Elders) willing to learn and share stories of the Hawaiian culture and traditions in modern day. An integrated class fit for all elders of our community, gain an understanding of the Hawaiian language shared through chants, songs and storytelling. Enjoy playing ‘ukulele and sing songs of old Hawai’i. Dance Hula ʻAuana, modern style of hula.
Attendance by invitation from Kumu Keala or an attending Kupuna.
Keiki Hula
When: Tuesday 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Level: Beginners
Where: Gazebo, West Hawaii Civic Center
Basic hula movement, chanting and motions fit for a hula beginner as they gain an understanding of basic beats and tempos. Ipu is a must to join Keiki Hula, please bring an ipu. Each keiki must come prepared with a red pā’ū skirt, a Nā Wai Iwi Ola T-shirt, bottle of water and a welcome mat rug. Potluck snacks are encouraged.
Hula Kahiko / ʻAuana
When: Tuesday 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Level: by invitation only
Ancient and modern style of hula associated with the history and traditions of Hawai’i as a method of storytelling. Gain a deeper understanding of hula steps and hula movement explored through storytelling focusing on the art of Hula. Learn traditional chants, further your knowledge with traditional steps, and develop a better understanding of hula history and traditions.

When: Wednesday 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
Level: Intermediate
Hawaiian language class – each class is different than the other.
