The ancient waters of life
He Lei Hiwa No 'Iolani Luahine
A lei of memories for 'Iolani Luahine
January 26, 27 & 28, 2012
Keauhou Beach Resort
The 10th annual ‘Iolani Luahine Hula Festival will be held on January 26, 27 & 28, 2012 at the Keauhou Beach Resort. The 'Iolani Luahine Festival was established in 2003 with a vision to perpetuate the hula, and it also serves as a way to honor the memory of 'Iolani Luahine and her contributions to the preservation of hula and Hawaiian culture.
'Iolani Luahine was admired as a famed hula dancer that preserved the ancient dance traditions. Aunty 'Iolani’s superb talents, attractiveness to audiences, and personal commitment kept the ancient dance art from being lost. Her career is testament to the adage that dances are passed down like myths, from one artist to another.
This year the festival will be expanded to three days and will include a visit to ‘Iolani’s birth place in Napo’opo’o Village, hula workshops and presentations, and an educational challenge to Kumu Hula with a prize for the one who best demonstrates the values of ‘Iolani Luahine:
education and Hawaiian culture.
Evening musical entertainment will be open for everyone to enjoy – tickets will be available at the door for a modest donation.
